I used my new Nikon D3200 to take this panorama of the Union Buildings in Pretoria/Tswane.

I really had a lot of fun at the Union Buildings… Not just taking photographs, but also meeting some of the foreign and local tourists that were there that day, having fun and taking in the history that is represented there.

The Union Buildings are the cake and the beautiful 15m high bronze statue of our former president, Nelson Mandela, is the cherry on top. While I was there people were constantly streaming past this bronze beauty, looking, pointing, photographing and mimicking the whole afternoon long. Just so amazing to see.

The symbolism of the buildings and statue are filled with deep and significant meaning for all South Africans and I felt so grateful and lucky to have had the opportunity to be there and to have that amazing experience. The entire occasion was made even more special by the fact that I was able to share it with my loving wife and youngest son.

To capture this grand occasion and place I took my 3 day old Nikon and captured some great images there and also created this panoramic photo. I stitched 8 vertical images together to create a photo that is over 100 mega pixels in siza… suitable to create a photo print that is metres wide!

I just love how I managed to capture the guy standing in the centre, holding his arms out, mimicking Nelson Mandela”s statue.

While standing on the Hartbeespoort Dam wall I took this photograph of the archway. It was quite tricky getting a photo without cars in it since this wall is a very busy roadway. I was fortunate to be able to get this one without any traffic. Besides straightening of the image and some retouching to create the grungy effect which I like, this photo is almost out of camera. However the sky was terribly bland and that resulted in a very boring image. For this reason I decided to replace the sky with this lovely one with it’s nice soft and puffy clouds. That has made the photo fare more interesting and lively.

This dam wall has a long and complicated history that dates back to 1895, however it was only completed in 1925. The Triumphal Arch built on the dam wall and over the road that traverses it was erected to provide structural mass to the wall’s water-retaining strength. The Latin inscriptions on the arch translated into English is: “I shall pour down rain on the thirsty land and showers on the dry ground”

While standing on the Hartbeespoort Dam wall while poking the camera lens through a diamond mesh fence I took this photograph of the slipway. It was pretty dark down there and I wanted to expose for the cascading water, yet I wanted enough depth of field to have a sharp image; near to far… So I set the shutter speed to 1/50th of a second with a f-stop of f/16. As you can see, these settings worked really well.

It was a quiet Saturday morning in Cape Town while I was taking a walk through the city. Suddenly in the distance I heard an unusual hissing noise. I followed the sound, looked up and noticed that it was because this window cleaner. Well, he is more of a building cleaner than a window cleaner… I then proceeded to take a few photographs of this man at work.

I stood for a while and watched. I was amazed to see numerous people walk by and not even have the slightest inkling of the activity above their heads.

There was a couple walking on the sidewalk, around a beaconed off area, that were oblivious of this guy. It was amusing to see how they still getting sprayed by a fine mist and watching their startled reactions.
