It’s always a pleasant experience to greet Solomon, The Leather Man (a name coined by me, since he has no official business name). He is a friendly and enthusiastic man always in bright colours.

I watched him serving customers and noticed how he listens to their needs. If you want something he hasn’t got on his table, you can place an order and collect it in a weeks time; or for the more impatient shopper he is willing to make the product on the spot during his quiet moments.

I questioned him about his pure leather belts but was unfortunate since the smallest one in the colour and style that I liked was several inches to big for me. Solomon offered to make one for while I waited. However there were no loose buckles lying in his box which I liked. So, he promptly took up the ready made belt which I liked, cut out the buckle, shortened it to my required size, inserted the buckle, trimmed off any rough edges and upon my request also punched another two holes into it. This happened so quickly. I can’t tell you how long I waited. Was it 5 minutes? Was it 10 minutes? I honestly don’t think it was the latter.

I speak under correction when I say Marieline Kruger has been trading her Aloe Ferox products at the Boeremark (the Farmer’s Market) in Pretoria for about 20 years. One thing is for certain, she is there on Saturday mornings before 06:00 with tons of advice and guidance regarding the benefits of her great range of natural products. If you ask her she will keenly hand you a 4 page A5 flyer, listing her numerous products with brief descriptions of their application. These products cover a wide range of uses such as “Wellness”, “Wholesomeness”, “Skin Care” and other general uses such as “Bath Care”, Hair Care”, “Men’s Den”, “Pet Care” and much more.

As I stated previously, you can find Marieline at the Saturday morning Boeremark (the Farmer’s Market) in Pretoria Street, Silverton, Pretoria, or you can call her on 012 991 2679 or 083 421 2783.

Don’t think you can just stand around at the little stream at the Boeremark (Farmer’s Market) in Silverton, Pretoria, and not be approached by one of the locals; hoping to be fed a little tidbit. As all regulars know all to well, the geese are the lords of the water at the Boeremark.

I just love seeing the geese there, they add to the rural feel of the market.

The Boeremark (the Farmer’s Market) in Pretoria Road, Silverton, Pretoria is definitely to place to be early on a Saturday morning. Not just for the amazing variety of fresh produce, food products and hand made goods, but also to an opportunity to socialise with friends, family and strangers. The vibe is laid back and has a bit of the-old-world feel to it.

There are several spots where one can sit, eat, drink and relax. I recommend that you take the opportunity to enjoy some of Moer Koffie’s looovely capo-chino.

While photographing an ‘against animals in circuses’ protest in Centurion, Pretoria, a man came up to me and complimented us for making our voices heard. He then mentioned that he was a member of South Africa’s anti poaching unit. He then pulled up his sleeve and asked me if I would be interested in taking a photo of his tattoo. As you could imagine, I was blown away by what I saw…. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is!

My wife and I went to the Boeremark in Pretoria for the first time. We were blown away by our experience. The people were so friendly and we had a great time having conversations with many of the vendors and their customers. The atmosphere was more social rather than business like, even though it was as busy as can be. It is not typically “up market” and a large proportion of the vendors sell farm produce such as fruit, vegetables and dairy products while others sell crafts, fresh hot food and coffee. Others sell herbal products, art and craft works… and more.

I just had to take a photograph of this friendly vendor with her jovial hat and a beautifully finished hand woven leather carpet.

I used my new Nikon D3200 to take this panorama of the Union Buildings in Pretoria/Tswane.

I really had a lot of fun at the Union Buildings… Not just taking photographs, but also meeting some of the foreign and local tourists that were there that day, having fun and taking in the history that is represented there.

The Union Buildings are the cake and the beautiful 15m high bronze statue of our former president, Nelson Mandela, is the cherry on top. While I was there people were constantly streaming past this bronze beauty, looking, pointing, photographing and mimicking the whole afternoon long. Just so amazing to see.

The symbolism of the buildings and statue are filled with deep and significant meaning for all South Africans and I felt so grateful and lucky to have had the opportunity to be there and to have that amazing experience. The entire occasion was made even more special by the fact that I was able to share it with my loving wife and youngest son.

To capture this grand occasion and place I took my 3 day old Nikon and captured some great images there and also created this panoramic photo. I stitched 8 vertical images together to create a photo that is over 100 mega pixels in siza… suitable to create a photo print that is metres wide!

I just love how I managed to capture the guy standing in the centre, holding his arms out, mimicking Nelson Mandela”s statue.

My parents both owned a number of VW Beetles when I was a child. As a young adult I inherited my mom’s 1972 VW Fun Bug Beetle. So I have love for them and always point them out to friends or family when I see one.

I was a passenger in a car and happened to have my camera handy when we passed one on the road; so I managed to capture this photograph of it.

I’ve removed all colour besides red and orange from the photograph to help create a more captivating image than the original photograph. This car was very dirty and peppered with bird droppings. I have removed most of them and by removing the blue colours from the photo I have managed to create an image that is quite appealing.
